A Paranormal Mother’s Day

Silence

Mother’s Day: 2007.
The first one spent in our new home.

I fell asleep rather early that night. I had not felt well and passed out on the couch watching Back to the Future. When around 12 o’clock, I was awaken by a loud popping noise outside the sliding glass door.

As my eyes came into focus in the darkness, a shadow fell across the couch where I lay. Something had just passed by the sliding glass door between the streetlight and my house.

My heart jumped into my throat. Adrenaline started pumping. Alert and at the ready I jumped up and rushed to the sliding glass door. Sliding open the screen door I jumped outside prepared to find a prowler scoping the house. Fists clenched, holding my breath I leapt.

Nothing was there.

A cool breeze caused the trees to wave silently in the night air. Otherwise, the night was still.

Scratching my head, I went back inside and lay down on the couch. I closed my eyes and began counting backwards from 100 to calm myself and aid in putting myself back to sleep.

As I reached the mid 70′s I slowly became aware of another noise outside. An odd, thump, scrape, thump, scrape sound. As if something were being dragged around the house. Thump, scrape, thump scrape… the noise passed the front windows and made it’s way back toward the sliding door.

Angry at the trick someone was playing on me I jumped to my feet. Instantly the noise stopped. I was frozen in my place. Years of horror movies had taught me that only the stupid go to check out a strange noise in the middle of the night. Only the naive who are just asking for a horrible end would have the balls to step outside in the middle of the night to find out what is making that strange and sick sound.

Yet, I did it. Stepped outside like a badass (dumbass actually) hands clenched again to ‘beat up’ whoever or whatever was out there.

Nothing.

Angry, I ran around the perimeter of the house, searching for some punk who had tried to escape my wrath (like I said… dumbass). There was no one there.

Feeling that familiar sense of dread I used to get as a teenager living in the pitch dark basement. The feeling of a presence other than myself. I hurried into the house and locked the doors and windows.

Eventually, I fell back asleep. Only to be awaken again around 3:15 or so by the same thump, scrape, thump, scrape. This time, however, I did not get the chance to jump up and act like Captain Hero saving the day. Because, as I began to sit up, something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye.

(See, my computer room is just off the living room. Diagonal fromthe couch.)

There was someone in my computer room!

Again, I froze. My heart racing a million miles. My stomach clenched as if ready for a fight. My breathing stopped. I was paralyed in place.

The figure I could see in my computer room was not so much a figure as a form with the abscence of light. A dark looming shape in the doorway. A heavy breathing came from the shape. A haggard, dry raspy sound like that of an emphysema patient on oxygen.

Fear gripped every cell in my body. Like a frightened child who sees the boogeyman in his closet, I was unable to do anything but stare.

The thump, scrape noise began again. This time right outside the sliding door. Even with the doors and windows shut, the sound still resonated like they were all open.

My eyes flicked to the door, for nothing more than a second, and back at the figure in my computer room. It was gone! Replaced by the blue glow of my computer led lights.

Panicking I ran upstairs to check on my family. Everyone was fine. Sleeping soundly.

Going back downstairs, I scratched my head stupidly. I went to the kitchen to get a drink of water. As I entered the kitchen my heart stopped. Something passed in front of the microwave clock. As fear smashed into me headlong, I quickly reached up and flicked on the light.

Empty… not a damn thing.

I did’t get back to sleep that night until close to 6 am. Just as the sun was coming up.

Later that day, Niki complained about all the noise I had made outside the night before. Though I had scarcely made a sound the entire night. She also recounted a pretty strange dream which had similarities to some of the phenomena I experienced the prior evening.

Since then, only a handful of times have I heard the thump, scrape noise. And occasionally I will see the dark looming figure out of the corner of my eye. But I has become apparent that whatever it is, it means no harm. Whatever it is, just likes to hang around.
